    Tenafly today takes up approx. 4.6 square miles of area with a population of 14,214 people calling
    it their hometown. Located only six miles north of the George Washington Bridge to NYC, Tenafly is a
    predominately residential community with a total of 4,897 housing units. Its street planning and overall
    development were determined for the most part by its hills, valleys and tall trees.
    These natural characteristics have given the borough its special magical charm. With its famously excellent
    public school system as well as the ideal combination of its small-town feel & convenience, Tenafly maintains
    its place as one of Bergen Counties most attractive and sought after towns.

    Wonderful recreational facilities, parks and woodlands, good cultural programs, diverse houses of
    worship, excellent schools, quality housing, and quality borough services all help to attract newcomers to
    and keep current residents in this historic town. Tenafly's commitment to conservation, cultural diversity,
    quality schools, and historic preservation are its cornerstones.

    Tenafly’s unique business district offers many choices of local shops and eateries as well as
    professional services and a Movie Theater. The business area boundaries are well defined and for the most
    part are limited to the center of town only, also featuring the borough’s architectural icon; the historical
    Railroad Station built between 1872 to 1874.
    Good planning, strict zoning regulations enforcement and continuous hands-on direct involvement of its
    residents, have established Tenafly as a wonderful place to live and invest in. Recent years have seen an
    increased level of activity related to new residential construction as well as renovations, remodeling & home
    improvement in general, all resulting in an overall increase to property values in the borough.
    Whether Victorian or Tudor, a Ranch or a Colonial, homes in Tenafly architecturally range in style from older
    historic homes to new contemporary structures of various sizes and on a variety of lot sizes.

    Open to the public, the 65 acre Tenafly Nature Center is a wonderful park for enjoying the outdoors
    while learning about the local natural environment; the wildlife, flora & fauna who call these habitats home.
    Offering educational fun programs for children and adults, the center is also open for good old hiking along
    its 6 miles of marked trails, ponds and streams. The Tenafly Nature Center adjoins the Borough's Lost Brook
    Preserve, together they include a combined 378 acre tract of nature.

    The JCC (Jewish Community Center) offers many sports facilities including indoor and outdoor
    swimming pools, cultural events and community recreational activities, all housed in and around its state of
    the art building and grounds located on the east hill of Tenafly. It is one of the largest such centers in Bergen

    The Knickerbockers Country Club located on the west side of town also offers a wonderful variety of
    country club activities & facilities such as golf, tennis and swimming pools. In addition, the borough also offers
    public recreational facilities including 2 pools, various sports courts, a skate park as well as a library & youth
    center.  

    Tenafly is famous for its excellent public school system!
    There are four elementary schools strategically located throughout the borough to minimize the need for
    busing, making it conveniently ideal for young students and their parents.
    Tenafly has one middle school as well as a famously well known high school which is proudly considered by
    residence to be the crown jewel of their public education system.
    The Tenafly High School offers many honors and AP courses (Advance Placement) and its students over the
    years have continuously achieved high averages on their SAT scores.
    For 2002-03 Tenafly students had SAT average scores of 636 in Math and 574 in verbal.  
    For 2003-04 Tenafly students had SAT average scores of 622 in Math and 563 in verbal.

    NYC is a short driving distance away via the George Washington Bridge which is only 6 miles from the
    center of Tenafly thus making it an ideal suburb location for commuting to and from Manhattan. Rte. 9W &
    The Palisades Parkway, both along the east side of the borough, put the commuter within minutes driving
    time of the GW Bridge. Public transportation is also available with frequent direct bus service to NYC as well
    as to other points in NJ.
    Although currently Tenafly has no direct train service from town, commuter trains are available not too far
    away with park-n'-ride stations in River Edge and Hackensack, about 15-20 minutes away by car.
    Discussions are underway to possibly revive the rail line running through the center of town for commuter
    purposes. Although historically the coming of the original train line in the 1860’s played a major roll in the
    further development of Tenafly, now days, with the exception of very limited freight activity, this line is hardly
    in use. The possibility of future direct light rail service is till in the discussion & planning stages and a while
    away, however it remains an option which if & when brought to fruition will create added value to this already
    hot in-demand  real estate region.
    Major Airports in the area include Newark Liberty in NJ, about 30 minutes driving time, and two NY
    airports as well. La Guardia is approximately 30 minutes away and JFK at about 45 minutes to an hour.
    Travel times are approximate and of course depend on traffic so it is always wise to plan airport trips at off-
    peak times to avoid rush-hour traffic when possible.
